Define Your Own Success

Define Your Own Success

June 29, 2018

Success is a word that can mean several different things to different people, specifically when it comes to your career. The challenge we face with success today in the workforce is the stereotypical notions of promotions, seniority, and the corner office. However, the nature of work is constantly evolving and changing and so should our perceptions of professional success.

According to several studies, 29% of people believe that traditional perceptions of success are outdated and 76% of people admit that success is perceived differently by different people. However, despite the acknowledgment of these differences, most people feel as though not everyone is supported in the pursuit of their own version of success, particularly when it doesn’t follow the traditional path of climbing the corporate ladder.

Focus On You

When it comes to success, it is best to focus on your own definition of success and where your priorities are, not what your parents, siblings, and corporate leaders believe. We have all been taught that things should matter. This includes money, good benefits, a nice car, a big house, and fancy job title. Nice things are great, but we all have our own idea of what those things are. That is why it only makes sense to choose your own paths to get them.

Consider Your Goals

When it comes to your own success, you need to prioritize what is important to you. Is your family a priority? Is traveling a priority? Is working from home a priority? Is having a flexible schedule a priority? Is getting that brand new Mercedes a priority? Materialistic or not, it’s important to dig deep within yourself to know and consider all priorities you have. By taking the time to dig deep, you will discover your own personal values and these values will help you to carve out a happy, exciting, and fulfilling path.

Don’t Compare

Not comparing yourself and your success to other individuals can be the hardest part. However, it is crucial to not look at what other people have and think they seem happy and want the same things. Money can’t always buy happiness and your successes and happiness are completely under your control. Somebody else’s post on Facebook should not and cannot define your success. If you see yourself beginning to compare, go back to your values and personal and professional dreams and desires. You are the one that has to live this life so make it the best one you’ve got.
